First Gawler Rifles

The voluntary, militia-style First Gawler Rifles (or Gawler First Rifles) existed as far back as 1859 and the Volunteer Mounted Rifles formed in 1890, although disbanded five years later when a new Act enforced volunteer forces to become militia, leading to the formation of the non-military Gawler Rifle Club in 1897 (gawlerhistory.com/Loutit,_Thomas_Flett & Coombe 1910).
