St George's School was opened, founded by the Rev. W.H Coombs upon a portion of Orleana Square. Messrs. Prosser, Helmore and Gibson successively presided over the school, until 1857 when L.S. Burton was appointed teacher. St Georges School was the principal school in the locality until 1875 when the State over took the task of primary education
