In the late 1940’s no objection was raised to Council giving approval to interested bodies to erect a rest room centre with toilets for the Country Women’s Association with kitchen and adequate facilities for The Mothers and Babies Health Associations on the Market Allotment. This land had never actually been a market place. Attempts to establish a market in the 1870’s were abortive. Tenders had been called for the erection of a market building, but the tender received was not taken up. The allotment had been fenced and trees planted in the early 1900’s , and a lawn planted later. Legal difficulties concerning the use of the land for the purpose were encountered and other problems arose.
The nucleus of a fund for the Rest Rooms project had come from profits of the 1949 Back to Gawler celebrations.
In 2002 the original building was demolished and a large new building was erected in 2003. This was originally a bedding store and is now a Sportspower store.
