Day Roland Phillip [Roly] 1923 – 1996 Farmer and Grazier
Roly attended the Reeves Plains Primary School, Gawler High School, and Roseworthy Agricultural College.
He enlisted in the R.A.A.F. in WW2 and, after 4 years, he returned to his home property.
In 1951, Roly became involved in forming the Air Training Corps [A.T.C.] in Gawler and continued as Flight Lieutenant for 31 years. He was awarded the Cadet Forces Medal for being the longest serving officer.
He was married to Dene and they resided in Gawler East.
Roly was made a life member of the Country Fire Services and received the Australian National Fire Medal for his 23 years of service.
He served for many years on the executive of the Gawler Show Society, was president for 3 years, and was made a life member. Roly was also a life member of the Wasleys Agricultural Bureau.
Roly was both Priest’s Warden and People’s Warden within the Gawler Anglican Parish.
He was President of the Rotary Club of Gawler in 1964, was District Governor in 1982/3, and honoured by Rotary with the presentation of a Paul Harris Fellowship.
His funeral service was conducted in the St Georges Anglican Church, which was packed to capacity, and many of his Rotary, Gawler Show Society, CFS and A.T.C. associates and friends formed a guard of honour.
