Benjamin Edward Deland, a 25 year old carpenter, arrived in South Australia in 1855 aboard the ship "Warren Hastings". He went on to become a builder, architect, miller and Mayor of Gawler, Hamley Bridge and Blyth. Benjamin Deland owned a number of other properties in Gawler, including a brickyard and also the shop and residence that was rented to John Wilkinson.
Benjamin Edward Deland was elected as Gawler Councillor for North Ward 1866 to 1867, and also 1869 to 1870. He was then elected Gawler Councillor for East Ward in 1878 and 1880 and then elected Councillor for South Ward in 1885. He was elected Mayor of Gawler from 1885 to 1886 and then elected as Councillor for North Ward in 1887 to 1888.
Benjamin Deland married Jane Mary Catherine Combe in 1870. They were heavily committed members of the Gawler Congregational Church. They passed away in 1906 and 1909, respectively, an in 1912 their children had a stained glass memorial window installed in the Congregational Church, it was commandingly located in the centre of the three windows at the eastern Light Square end of the church,[1] and inscribed "To the memory of Benjamin Edward Deland, who died August 20, 1906 and Jane Mary Catherine, his wife, who died July 12, 1909. Erected by his loving children." After the Uniting of the Congregational and Methodist Churches in 1977, Gawler services were to be held in the Tod Street Church, so the window was relocated to the Sandy Creek Church, which was historically linked to the Gawler Congregational Church. It was installed inside in the front corner and backlit – it is fitting the Deland window went to Sandy Creek as it was Deland who presented the plans and specifications for the church when it was built in 1904 (the window is still there in 2026).
